Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz has become one of the most respected photographers in American cultural and political circles. Writers, rock, dance and sports personalities, political leaders, and practically all the great Hollywood stars have posed for her lens. Her work is characterized by a meticulous and sophisticated staging, as well as a carefully studied lighting that gives her photos a distinctive atmosphere. In 1975, she accompanied The Rolling Stones as their official photographer during their concert tour. Her images were acclaimed by critics for capturing the essence of the music and the surrounding atmosphere. Among Leibovitz's most recognized photos are the last one of Richard Nixon as President of the United States –as he boarded the helicopter when leaving the White House–, that of John Lennon naked and embracing Yoko Ono in a fetal position –taken a few hours before the former Beatle was assassinated–, that of Whoopi Goldberg in a bathtub full of milk, and the session with Queen Elizabeth II of England at Buckingham Palace during her official visit to the United States in 2007. Leibovitz's photographs have been featured in exhibitions in museums and galleries worldwide, including the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, where she was the first woman and the second living photographer to exhibit there; the International Center of Photography in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.
